I think you are both right.

I think that Y2K is not a hoax, and will result in huge losses for many businesses.

I also think that an automated solution is not possible, and that companies that purport to have one can probably be shorted into the ground.

There are some "real" Y2K plays, but they are companies that do the hard work of fixing software by hand, and companies that provide part-time clerical workers. There is going to be a huge demand for people to answer phones, correct billing statements by hand, etc. etc.
