You go to a few republicans who actually wanted health care reform (there were a few) and you make a deal.

Steve, that's simply not going to happen in our current climate. For two reasons. The Rep leadership in both houses of congress have dug their heels in on just saying no that any member of the caucus who violates it will have an almost impossible time moving up in the leadership, getting better committee positions (where much of the real power is). And second because should senator x or representative y make a deal, she or he will almost certainly see an opponent in the next Rep primaries running to their right, with more than a little money and possibly even the support of their own congressional caucus.

So to strike a deal is well beyond the cliched "profile in courage."
