By John Letzing

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Salesforce.com Inc. said Wednesday its fiscal fourth-quarter profit rose 48%, as the company added more than 4,000 new customers of its Internet-hosted business software in the period.

Fourth-quarter net income for the period ended in January rose to $20.4 million, or 16 cents a share, from $13.8 million, or 11 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. Revenue rose 22% to $354 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected Salesforce.com to post fourth-quarter earnings of 15 cents a share, and $342.3 million in revenue.

Salesforce.com has been an early proponent of so-called cloud computing, an increasingly popular model where software is delivered via subscription over an Internet connection.

"The movement to cloud computing is driving exceptional growth," Salesforce.com Chief Executive Marc Benioff said in a prepared statement.

Salesforce.com said it added 4,600 new customers in the fourth quarter, bringing its total to 72,500 -- a 31% increase compared to the same period a year earlier.

The San Francisco-based company also raised its outlook for its full fiscal year, with revenue growth now expected to be between 16% and 17%.

For its current, first fiscal quarter, Salesforce.com said it expects earnings to be between 12 and 13 cents a share, and revenue to be between $365 million and $367 million.

Analysts have been looking for first-quarter earnings of 18 cents a share, and $354.7 million in revenue.

Shares of Salesforce.com rose 1% to $70.25 in after-hours trading, following the earnings announcement.
