Hakimullah Mehsud, leader of Pakistani Taleban, reported killed in drone attack
The Pakistani military is investigating reports that Hakimullah Mehsud, the head of the Pakistani Taleban, has died of injuries sustained in a US drone strike earlier this month.

Major General Athar Abbas, a military spokesman, said it had not been confirmed whether the Taleban leader was dead or alive. “We are checking the veracity of the reports of death,” he said.

Mehsud was believed to have been severely injured in a US strike on his hideout on the border between South and North Waziristan on January 15. But in audio messages released following the attack, someone claiming to be Mehsud denied that he was in the area at the time.

State television quoted local tribal sources as saying that the Taleban commander died of injuries and had been buried in the Orakzai tribal area. The report did not clarify when he died.
