Just an observation: Deep discount broker can never identify the lot to sell, no matter in advance or afterward, for their customers because they have to deal with thousands of trade everyday. They can only afford to provide standard confirmation, and not customized confirmation. That is why discount brokers tell you it doesn't matter, and it is up to yourself. They are not talking in terms of IRS regulations. I think if IRS does not provide some clear guidance, a lot of people will be trapped or at least confused. Because we are talking about thousands regular tax payers here, if not millions. It seems now everybody gets a deep discount broker and trades stocks, from taxi drivers, to custodians,to housewives, and to college professors, you name it.
