The gap between China and Hong Kong is negligible despite the false promises about Hong Kong having Sars [one of the special administrative regions, Taiwan being another and Tibet and Uighurs another and maybe some others too and of course the most important one being the ruling class who are the most special of all].

Hong Kong is a mere pimple on a pumpkin. Still a significant economic entity in its own right, but not really much different than Auckland is from the rest of New Zealand and the capital Wellington. Except that Shanghai must be a bigger deal than Hong Kong these days [I haven't actually checked].
