The press was explicitly given the right to voice/write their opinion.

"The press" wasn't given any rights. People where given the right to freedom of the press.

The press of the time in America, was essentially individuals or small groups. You didn't have large media corporations. But the people retain their rights within the larger structure.

Freedom of religion does not give the churches political rights.

Freedom of religion is irrelevant to the rights of speech or the press, its a separate right. It covers only religion. Its a right of the people to exercise their religion, it can, like the other rights protected in the first amendment, be exercised individually or collectively.
