Gary and others,
I'm sorry to sound so negative recently, but we shouldn't keep blinders on. I think Gary's going a little overboard calling Syquest a generic brand. Have you looked at the price of IOM before the Zip?

"Ever buy a can of tomato sauce? There's Hunt's. And there's generic. Both have a market. However, Hunt's never lowers their price to compete with generic. They sell on quality. And, they sell A LOT."

Point taken regarding name brands, but I don't believe tomatoes evolve as quickly as removable storage devices. Quality last year is selling for half price this year.

Ever buy a pair of jeans? There's Levi's, generic, Tommy, Polo, Calvin Klein, and even khaki's... Didn't one of these companies just lay off A LOT of people?

Zips crushed the Syquest and MO devices because the drives were cheap, and media was even cheaper per MB. Zip drives were cheap because that's how you sell disks. Zip disks were cheap, not because of cost improvements, but was cheap media--Bernoulli and Syquest disks are still expensive. Jaz has a good start, but it would be silly to ignore the SparQ.

Syquest, however, may have done irreparable damage recently. A slew of products, that provided no significant advantages (price or performance) over products that were already out there creating a lot of hopes that went to shit. The price of SparQ could be that significant advantage that their other products lacked as long as the performance is still there. For all of you that talk of compatibility with Jaz, who cares. You have a Zip to transport files. If both the SparQ drive and the media are signficantly cheaper that may be reason enough to jump ship. If you need 3 more Gigs of space with a possible need for more later, I'd think twice about getting more Jaz carts, if the SparQ performance is there. Of course, I'd be worried about where Syquest was going to make their money and if they'd be around to sell more disks.
