Leon Festinger's book "When Prophecy Fails" used an example of the followers of a doomsday cult to demonstrate "belief persistence" and "cognitive dissonance." The book gave an inside account of the belief persistence in members of a UFO doomsday cult, who were so emotionally invested in their leaders prophecy, that their proselytization actually increased after their leaders "end of the world" prediction failed to come true, and the world did not end. "The prediction of the Earth's destruction, supposedly sent by aliens to the leader of the group, became a disconfirmed expectancy that caused dissonance between the cognitions, the world is going to end and the world did not end.
