I was just focusing on the Dalai Lama part (just glanced at the article originally), but I think now you're probably talking more about the Taiwan part. In which case, I agree, it's dumb and antagonizing. Still, it's been foreign policy for 60 years, he'd be impeached if he tried to change it unilaterally, never mind what your allies in the region might think, etc ... Another thing, though, is that from what I read somewhere you're not even selling them the good stuff ... China might be overplaying it's hand a bit here, imo.
