You're probably familiar with the advantages incumbents have in elections. These advantages count even more in primaries since the rules of the game (and the metagame behind the scenes) are under complete control of the leaders in that political party.

So unless Howard Dean and other Democrats start calling for Reid's ouster, he will never lose a primary. And of course, Reid will always have the support of the Democrats. All he has to do is remind them that they need to be united against the Republicans, and he won't ever have to answer to challenges from within.

By the way, the same exact thing happens in the Republican party. That's just the way the game works.
