Richard, most people would define an operating system 'kernal' as
the most essential core of the OS. The OS kernal handles process
scheduling, memory management, external/internal interrupt handling.
It does not normally include such functions as file systems, network
protocols, user interfaces, system administration, etc.

Just to clarify, the word is spelled "kernel", not "kernal". The Motorola press release spells it both ways. -Greg
