The possibility of Allende winning Chile's 1970 election was deemed a disaster by a US government who wanted to protect US business interests and prevent any spread of communism during the Cold War

Yeah.. and the Chilean's thought Allende's administration was a disaster as well...

A majority of their Congress demanded that Allende stop the civic unrest that his party was initiating, strikes, demonstrations, and nationalizations of business.

RECALL.. Allende DID NOT receive a majority of the vote in that election. In fact, he was elected 36.3% of the vote, not exactly a "mandate" for the kind of socialist change he attempted to implement.

And during the period he governed, inflation in Chile SOARED to 140% and real GDP declined by 5.6%

Thus, what was apparent is that, as with Hugo Chavez, Allende was TEARING HIS COUNTRY APART, POLITICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY.

So it's not like the Chilean's needed US approval to overthrow Allende. Many were already more than willing to do it, but were wondering how the US would respond to such an action.

When Kissinger essentially stated he didn't care what the Chilean military did, it was the "green light" they were looking for.

And NOW look where Chile stands in the world rankings for democracy and freedom?

And look where Cuba and Venezuela like in that audit of freedom..

#'s 123 and 129, respectively.
