I hold some physical gold/platinum for just such a far from equilibrium posibility. But the sum of all fears is a very tough thesis to maintain during a human lifespan. I'm impatient, and for the most part, developing countries are as well and so pursue credit, capital, and fiat.

Another possibility, the sum of all hopes, is that the world will enter an era of unprecedeted growth. I'd argue that gold might do ok in this scenario as well, but primarily because of its physical beauty.

Consider also that the ROI of some public debt can be positive.
