I don't get the move either. I'm the same. The first time I bought XOM was mid-Oct after 30 or 40 years in the market. I traded it a lot last fall and made some pretty good dollar. Then I took a short vacation, starting just before its behavior changed. It fell quite a lot while I was away, so I jumped back in on my return. I was thinking that it had retraced nicely. The next day they announced the merger and the bottom fell out. The big down gap in December. I became a long term investor overnight. The dividends are a nice little treat. You'll get it, if you hold for a couple of days into next week payable in March.

I believe this crash started when hot money decided that 2010 would bring a relatively bad economy leading to downward pressure at the gas pump and that money retreated quickly. Then the XTO merger announcement was like tossing gas on an open fire. Then the stock finished its 2-3 month downward phase including a short dead cat bounce. Today's volume suggests to me some available money coming back into the stock, like your money helping to support its bottoming.
