Y. Chen,

Players in tech companies are partners on some things and are competitor on others. Has been for years.

Intel will win the battle for firmware content on the desktop since it owns the processor. No different from MS winning the battle for software content on the desktop since it owns the OS. However, Cisco will win the hw/sw battle in the backbone.

Second tier players like 3Com and Novell need to constantly look for new niches to survive/grow. Apple didn't look for a new niche. They thought superior technology was enough to carry the day. So they opted to do battle with MS/Intel, and suffered the inevitable.

Unless Intel/Microsoft/or Cisco all of a sudden gets a serious affliction of complacency (not likely, given their present CEOs) this fundamental law of markets is not likely to change.
