It's absolutely a factor. If I know that I'm dealing with people who believe the Earth is 6K or 10K years old, then I know I'm dealing with mental midgets and will not vote for them. How can I trust someone like that to make the correct decisions backed by scientific evidence, when they don't acknowledge the science that most kindergarteners take for granted? And then when you discover that an entire American party is dominated by such people, it informs your decision on whether to vote for anyone in that party as well.
