The banks should in principle have been let go, end of story.

The problem being however, we have bailed the banks out all the time since the early 70s.
One cannot bail out the banks for 30 years and then suddenly let them belly up.
That's exactly the big Lehman mistake, just because those guys were a former competitor, still, however, letting them go while saving the rest, a SERIOUS mistake.
