Obama threw out single-payer right at the outset of the healthcare reform initiative, because he believed that any bill that included it would be unacceptable to Republicans, some of whom he still believed might support a more moderate approach.

The case Obama has made or not made, however, has nothing to do with the question of whether or not the Canadian or Swedish systems work well.

What is amazing to me is if these programs in Canada and Sweden for example are so great, then how come Obama with all his star power has not made a convincing case?

Because of the profit motive and that money drives politics and because politics has become so adversarial that many Americans knee jerk fight something they don't understand?

I'll add Norway to the list of countries offering socialized medicine that works and that the people just laugh at us because of our fear.
