Rumours are swirling that New York Governor David Paterson will be forced to resign when the New York Times publishes a "bombshell" story sometime this week.

Business Insider initially reported that the governor would resign on Monday when the Times published its story. However, a Paterson spokesperson has denied the governor would resign, but admitted a Times story is in the works.

"There is absolutely zero truth to these rumors. The governor is not resigning," Paterson's deputy communications director Marissa Shoenstein emailed Gawker.com.

The governor has already admitted to an affair with a state employee and The Daily Times says the new report is "much worse."

Paterson met privately with Democratic leaders over the weekend to discuss re-election plans, including whether he would resign or pledge to not run, The Associated Press has reported.

Paterson took over the state's governorship in 2008 when then-governor Elliot Spitzer resigned after it was revealed that he was a client of a prostitution ring under investigation by the federal government.
