They could and probably would choose to take drugs from other suppliers. Your conclusion ignores foreign competitors. When prices are raised, sensible buyers look elsewhere. There may be some drugs that they can't get elsewhere but you can't assume that US drug companies have absolute pricing power.

Or they, at the very least, may be forced to cut their R&D.

If that will happen, I would hope that they would, at least, focus on new antibiotics and anti-virals. We can get by, imo, for a while, with our current statins and beta blockers and NSAID's. Falling behind the curve with infections could prove to be terrible.
