Horse and buggy supply and services industries went out of business because they lost their rationale to be in business.

The health insurance companies are not like other insurance companies. Insurance companies manage and spread risk wrt fire, earthquake, flood, etc, etc. No one knows when and if tragedy will strike.

Health insurance companies otoh seem to rely mostly on political ties to stay in business.

When an industry only adds to costs and provide little or no benefits, and when that differential becomes too big (when you can't do the math), then it is perhaps time to let them go.

There are plenty of examples where a single payer system works.
