Bullish Kinross Gold Options Surge on Stansberry Recommendation
2010-02-09 16:24:15.152 GMT

By Jeff Kearns
Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Trading of bullish Kinross Gold Corp. options jumped to an 11-week high after Stansberry & Associates Investment Research recommended buying March $17 calls to purchase shares of Canada’s third-largest producer of the precious metal.

Almost 20,000 Kinross calls changed hands, quadruple the four-week average and 19 times greater than the number of puts giving the right to sell at 11:18 a.m. in New York. The shares rose 0.8 percent to $17.21. The March $17 calls gained 37 percent to $1.30 and accounted for almost nine-tenths of the call volume.

Stansberry said that gold miners may rally because they are “oversold,” or have fallen too far too fast, and that Kinross “probably has less downside” compared with rival miners if prices for the metal extend declines. Gold futures have lost 12 percent in New York since Dec. 3.
