The basic rule is that a pound of fat equates to 3500 calories. If people limit their caloric intake, while expending calories, the body will dip into those fat reserves.

That's the accepted wisdom, and it's wrong. It's based on the concept that your body works on a thermodynamic basis, and it's "calories in and out."

Unfortunately, our bodies are thermostatic. We chug along at an accepted rate, and adjust to stay at it.
