There's also the nightly news effect on raising children. There have been so many stories of abducted children that now letting your children out to play is regarded as an unsafe practice in most areas. So they sit & play on the computer instead.

1980 was the year Coke switched from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener, other soda makers followed suit. HFCS is in almost everything now.
