The line by line work would just involve changing all date definitions from mm/dd/yy to mm/dd/yyyy format, so I guess you don't need to be a programmer to do that. I still think it's mainly a mainframe problem and not a major deal for SUNW. People back in the 60's and 70's didn't think their programs would still be running through the end of the century. It's also a throw back to when an extra couple of bytes here and there could actually make a difference to performance i.e when systems didn't have close to the amount of RAM they have now. I just can't see that a lot of programs written for more recent UNIX systems would still have the same amount of problems. I may be wrong, but I can't see how it is a major deal for SUNW.
