The difference now as Skeetbug would say is that we do actually print paper money and put it in circulation thus making it irrretreivable. We create debt. The Fed buys this debt creating a computer entry in the account of the US. Hopefully the Fed is wise enough now not to buy the debt and create the account. If the Treasury sells it to the public then no extra money is created but eventually the public will stop buying including the Chinese or interest rates will become crippling. The end game appears in any event just a different color.
