I am not sure Europe sent its best and brightest. The emigrating masses were among the poorest and least educated. You think the effect lingers on? I am afraid so......did you see what I posted yesterday? A science teacher in OH was burning crosses into his students' arms and subverting the text when it comes to evolution because he is a creationist.
