I have been in gaol, but that was as an 18 year old building the police station. I did various jobs, the most interesting one being a scaffolder, running around like a monkey building it, 9 stories up, zero safety things. Just skill. I was the helper. The actual ticketed scaffolder was amazing - like a monkey jumping around. The worst job was grinding the concrete lumps off in the basement without adequate breathing protection or hearing. I suppose my tinnitus is related to things like that.

A friend was one of their first customers. I didn't know about that until a decade or so later as I didn't know him then. He said the regular clientele were not your average Kiwi and he wouldn't want to spend long in there.

It was actually only the police cells, not the actual gaol. A temporary cage rather than permanent accommodation.

These days it would cost a fortune in safety equipment and drama to do what I used to do up the scaffolding.
