Nortel is a Canadian corporation. The acquired Nokia and Samsung patents offset future world-wide royalties so I wondered what type of currency those transactions got reconciled in. From your words, it sounds like it is the location of Qualcomm and not the opposing party that dictates the currency of these IP related transactions.

After relistening to the cnbc video, I also see I have misinterpreted Paul's "longer lasting" comment. He was more than likely referring to longer lasting in a session of use rather than having a longer overall life. That's unfortunate. There are way too many toys (and appliances) going early to landfill (or 3rd world bound recycle containers). Consumer durables need to become longer lasting, less disposable and more reliable.

On the USB modem front, that's the first time I've heard that one. Someone has done some further digging into the matter and come up with a fuller twist. As usual, it's all in the mix of more profitable vs less profitable growth. That's subject to being twisted further.
