My story is that I beat my draft physical by two days by trying to join the Marines. The Marine recruiter sent me for a physical. The corpsman who was administering the hearing test thought his machine was malfunctioning, and it was lunch time anyway. He passed me.

Two days later I went to exactly the same place for the draft physical. They had a little more time for the hearing test, and I failed it so bad they gave me a 1-Y designation and said get lost.

My hearing was shot because my Pard and I sold all our furs when we were Sophomores in highschool and went right down and bought two identical Ruger Blackhawks with all the money we had. We both still have them, but shooting them without hearing protection ruined my hearing in the high frequencies.

I'm not proud of it, but that's what happened. I still can't understand women's voices half the time because I can't hear their consonants. Sometimes I guess wrong and it gets me in trouble all over again.

A Selective Service guy walked by the line and indiscriminately pulled about one third of them out of line and told them they were going to be Marines

For a historical perspective, what year was that?
