Euro Net Short Positions In Week Ended Feb 9 Worth $9.9 Bln

CFTC: Speculative accounts built a new record net euro short position and added their net yen long position as per February 9, according to CFTC data Friday.

Speculators further increased their euro short position to a record short of -57,152 contracts. This compares to last week's short of -43,741, which was the record short at the time.

The Feb 9 net euro position was in contrast to the record net euro long of +119,538 contracts seen May 15, 2007, and the prior record net euro short of -40,654 contracts from September 16, 2008. In the yen, as per February 9, spec accounts had a net yen long of +22,396 contracts.

This compared to the net yen long of +7,135 seen last week and the net yen short of -4,347 contracts seen January 26 and the Dec 1 position of +56,907 contracts, which was the largest net yen long of 2009. The euro closed at $1.3789 and dollar-yen at Y89.65 February 9, versus Friday's closing levels of $1.3610 and Y90.05.
