The government essentially puts Social Security money in bonds already. And what if retirees weren't "responsible?" Then they should live on the streets in their elder years?

And why do we really want people who are working three jobs, raising kids, and just generally trying to get by to have to spend time they don't have to learn about the markets (where the lion's share of the result is based on luck)? Hell, we're barely equipped to know how to read the fine print on a credit card application.
