Nobody's in sheer ignorance about the federal deficit. But it shouldn't be concern #1. I hate using home budgeting analogies because they fail in so many ways, but if you were faced with a choice between losing your house or dying from cancer or taking on debt, would you not take on the debt? Sometimes debt is OK. All things being equal, you'd rather not have it, but the well-being of the country and its citizens has to come first right now. Go for it. But given where interest rates and inflation have been the last few years, we can afford some rise in both. What we need now is higher employment and a less panicked populace.
