At least a dozen hurt by waves at CA surfing contest
February 13, 2010 20:38 EST

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) -- At least a dozen people have been hurt in northern California after a crowd gathered to see a surfing contest was hit by some unexpected surf.

Two walls of water knocked dozens of spectators down the rocky beach. Some were left with broken bones.

A California state fire official says about 13 people swept from a seawall had significant injuries. That's down from a count of 15 earlier in the day. Scott Jalbert says that figure doesn't include others treated for injuries on the scene.

At least three of the injured have been taken to hospitals.

Jalbert says "a couple hundred" people were on the Mavericks Beach seawall when the waves struck. He says the "small but strong" waves were about 5 feet to 6 feet high by the time they hit.

The high water upstaged the contest, known as the most lucrative big-wave competition in the world. It was scheduled after forecasts called for record-breaking tall waves.

hi pat -

yes, vancouver is a very beautiful city.

i'm sorry it was marred by hooligans today.
our protestors are unusually polite and
law abiding and this 'element' has done a
lot of damage to their cause. they lost a
lot of support.

its a pity.
