I have heard that suggestion often enough.... Problem is (from my point-of-view, anyway) is that there is NOTHING that guarantees that the NEW crooks can't be even worse, even more venal or craven or easily manipulated or else just incredibly ill-informed and ignorant about how power works then even the OLD crooks were. That is why I am a strong believer what our Founding Fathers thought. That you should not believe in mere men... but you should design rational structures of government to insure that liberty and democracy survive. You are wasting time if you believe that there is ever some "noble leader" just over the horizon that is going to come along and save us from all the bad things. There is no TOOTH FAIRY. We have to do the hard work ourselves. That is why I support strong STRUCTURAL FIXES for America's chronic problem with deficit spending , (and which has bedeviled us, and been thoroughly BIPARTISAN for generations now, unfortunately). STRUCTURAL cures --- just like our Founding Fathers placed their faith in the ability to rationally divide power among various governmental branches, placing their hope that America could sustain a democracy and retain our liberties in the future on the rational principles of division of powers and Constitutional RESTRICTIONS on government. THEY did not place their faith in the alleged nobility of individual men, or in the ever-disappointing concept that some great and new fearless leader will come along (just over the hill! Just in the next election!) and 'save us all' from our evil mis-spending ways.... And, NEITHER DO I. Such a TOOTH FAIRY does not exist... and, even if one did, the actions of one individual could never last as long as something like our Constitution can. (That's why I want a Balanced Budget amendment placed in our constitution: Without a strong STRUCTURAL IMPEDIMENT to deficit spending our deficit spending will be EVER LASTING, regardless of which ever political party holds office in any given year.) I am an old bird, and I have seen governments and politicians come and go, so people can give up on trying to sell me that some new 'fearless leader' is ever going to come along and save us all from the big bad deficit wolf because he is so noble and pure and all that guff. I don't buy it any more. I have learned the lessons from actual history... (and Lucy has pulled that football away from Charlie Brown *far* too many times for me to ever fall for the empty rhetoric and promises again that every politician sells before every election.) Other people can swallow all the puffery and guff and can buy into the hope that some magical new 'fearless leader' will come along and save us all from ourselves and from the system we have allowed to be built but I AIN'T BUYING IT. I will put my hope in laws and carefully crafted structures (just as our founding fathers who trusted no King did when they made the deliberate choice to DIVIDE POLITICAL POWER three ways through their design of a triparte government). I, like them, will NOT put my faith in the fallibility of men, but rather in the structure of our Constitution. If someone doesn't support putting an anti-deficit clause into our federal constitution then, in my view, they simply AIN'T SERIOUS about ending deficits. (Or else they are simply gullible in hoping for some brave new fearless leader to come along and save then from the bad old deficit wolf. That ain't a real option.)
