I think the issue (particular to the Submarine Force) becomes one of privacy. Figure out how to make all of the berthing and heads gender-neutral and qualified women and gays would be welcomed aboard.

That sentiment from your link typified our solution to having mixed crews on the 86 foot long vessel we used on my project, which admittedly was not a sub but it was an aircraft carrier. The staterooms were about the size of a closet and the bunks were such that I could not turn over without getting out of bed first.

If we had any gays I did not know about it and don't care.
