The market should handle separation of wheat from chaff, whether in medicine, law, or general contracting. At least licensing requires some basic level of achievement. Once the minimum threshold is crossed, it's caveat emptor as in anything else.

Government is ill-equipped to protect the public from poor practitioners of anything but at least there are mechanisms in place for sanctions where licenses are concerned.

I do know what you mean about contractors' licensees. I've defended quite a few.
