Z and all, competition for Quantum?...

HEWLETT PACKARD (Monday's close: 63-1/2), IBM (Monday's close:
101-5/8) and SEAGATE TECH (Monday's close: 28-9/16) have agreed to
develop a standardized tape technology to simplify the network
storage industry. The effort is aimed at delivering open format
specifications and is slated to be offered on a licensee basis.
Each of the three participants will buy licenses and pay licensing
fees. The companies will set up an entity to handle licensing
requests. The companies will release further information as the
project gets under way. (Reuters 08:22 AM ET 11/04/97) For the

MKE is a very vertically integrated company, it has many other sub operations that supply it that it understands and manages succesfully. 3 months is not even beginning to give them a chance with this new operation. Give them a while longer to fully understand and start the process of tweaking before you jump to rash conclusions. They're very capable of pulling this off successfully, but it will take some time.

Z: There is some validity in your observations about the heads business. You are absolutely right, heads business is very very tricky. Technology is always elusive, manuafcturing a female dog, and the right R&D talent is very hard to get.

Regarding your comments about the high end, I think that market may consolidate soon. The market is obviously OUT there, it hasnt dies overnight, the only problem is, overnight we have a whole gang of players trying to act the cowboys. It may make sense for QNTM to divest itself out of the heads and the high end market. That will:

a) Improve the focus on the core DLT and Desktop drive business
b) Reduce about 50 cents losses (EPS) per quarter
c) much more stability in profits and higher growth, leading to higher shareholder value. No question about that.

Howvere, from a strategic point of view, it may make sense to hold on and make it work in the long run.
