Well... let's see:

One one hand we have a nice and fairly simple and straightforward product liability and consumer safety concern....

(Not the most important issue in the world, that's for sure, but government can dive right in without much fear of embarrassing themselves 'cause there ain't much in the way of waste of taxpayer funds that anyone can point to....)

And, on the other-hand we have a MASSIVELY COSTLY bailout of the entire financial system, which transferred hundreds of billions of dollars directly from the taxpayers to Mega Banks and AIG and whatnot....

Gee... I wonder why the government would not be all excited about 'sunshine' and 'public visibility' in the later, (and very different), case?
