It is hard wired for pattern recognition. As well, even though the human species is capable of abstract thinking, we prefer concrete thinking as it is simple and have to work at abstract thinking. And much of both our thought and seeing are done on an unconscous level we are not even aware of. Steven Pinker and Dennett. And very few people understand either Zen or existentialism. They know things about each one, but do not really understand what they mean. The reason is that to understand either requires a certain level of cognition that takes along time to learn.
