"Here's an example from Daily Kos:"

I don't read the Daily Kos.

It looks as if there was only a tiny number of people who were on this issue. Much smaller than the Birthers.

Um, you're like Steve in your understanding of how that site works. There are literally thousands of people who write for the site. About twelve are "front-pagers" -- those who are sanctioned to write for the front page of the site, and the rest are individuals who can write whatever they want. You can go on there, set up an account, and write whatever you want on Daily Kos.

If the audience thinks that what you write is worthy, you'll get dozens of recommendations and hundreds of comments and your article will be featured on the site for a day or so.

If it doesn't, then your article will simply be on a list of "Recent Diaries" for about half an hour and then will just disappear into an archive.

You'll notice that that this article had exactly ZERO recommendations and more than half of the only 17 comments are calling the writer a crank. Which he/she clearly is.
