I still have trouble putting my mind around those statistics about government employees. I loved my job and had security but I paid for it with a smaller pay check. Now all that appears to be out the window. The trouble with government is that people rise in the ranks on the basis of how many employees they supervise, so there is an incentive to add more staff even if you don't really need it. This is BS, and I never did it. In fact, I think it was during the Carter years, my unit ran lean and mean while our sister units were fat. Then an official edict came down to reduce staff and they wanted to make us participate. We challenged them and said "you reduce, we already did ours." We won.
