Boehner Says Obama "Deficit Commission" is "Cover for Raising Taxes"

GOP Leader Boehner commented on the president's so-called "deficit commission" proposal today, arguing that it's little more than "cover for raising taxes – and the last thing that this economy needs right now are tax increases." Watch him here:

We don't need to wait for a commission to attack the deficit. Republicans have proposed cancelling the unspent "stimulus" dollars and shutting down the TARP program, and using both to reduce the deficit. Republicans have also offered better solutions for curbing spending, getting control of the debt, and creating new jobs.

Boehner says the president isn't interested in putting his commission together in a bipartisan way – he wants to stack the deck in favor of tax hikes. And the Heritage Foundation says the commission "is compromised by a lack of legislative 'fast track' protections, a deadline that sends recommendations to a lame duck Congress, and a complete lack of any public hearings that allow for Americans' input."

But it's not just conservatives who are panning the idea or the president's attempts at deficit reduction – even liberals are admitting they fall "well short." For example:

"President Barack Obama's proposed budget relies on a commission without teeth to help his administration wrestle the deficit… The commission has yet to be appointed and there's no sure path to having its recommendations considered by Congress. The trouble is that the idea of establishing the commission by law failed last week when senators in both parties opposed it." (FACT CHECK: Obama Budget a Leap of Faith on Growth, Associated Press, 2/1/10)

"Even liberal economists questioned whether Obama is doing enough. Urban Institute economist Isabel Sawhill called such measures 'totally insufficient,' saying it is 'depressing' to see the administration abandon even the goal of a balanced budget." (Deficit climbs to record under Obama's budget, San Francisco Chronicle, 2/2/10)

"'Obviously, it falls well short of what will be needed to get deficits under control,' [Robert Greenstein, executive director of the liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities] said." (Obama budget calls for new spending to lower unemployment, help middle class, Washington Post, 2/2/10)
