I hear you MM. I only spent 14 years as a gov't auditor. I wasn't in the union [OIG wasn't allowed to be unionized]. As an exempt, salaried employee in the era of Affirmative Action I got stuck having to work my ass off while the protected class consistently did little or nothing of substance.

Basically the AA folks worked as little or as much as they wanted. They were untouchable & they knew it. They would get cash awards & merit promotions even when they should have been fired for non-performance.

Since our organization still had to accomplish their mission, that meant people like me who had no AA protections had to take up the slack or we'd find our job in jeopardy. It also meant we had to accept the fact that merit promotions, etc., were few & far between as there was only so much $$ in the budget for salaries & awards.

To accomplish our mission, auditors & investigators often had to travel. Guess who spent most of their time in travel status? Guess who got put on the most complex, often politically sensitive assignments?

And since most of those assignments were time sensitive, guess who got to work nights & weekends to assure the assignments were completed on time?

Hell, I could go on & on with how gov't inefficiencies, bureaucracy & AA made for so many outrageous outcomes it would make your head spin.

If it weren't for the fact that I loved what I did & was willing & dedicated enough to accomplish my work, I would have quit sooner like so many other highly skilled people did much quicker than I did. No one with genuinely marketable skills will put up with that much BS very long.

One other point. Even though I was not fairly compensated compared to many of my AA peers in gov't, I never felt like I was underpaid compared to my peers in the private sector. From what I could surmise from my few contacts in private accounting & auditing firms I was paid about on par or even a little better.
