Free people each do what they think is best.

I think it's best that I deny other people of their lives (as well as their money) before they do the same to me.

See the contradiction? If I perceive I have the freedom to kill and steal before someone does it to me, that's what I think is "best". It's also called the "Law of the Jungle, where it's survival of the fittest.

IMO, free people are those who accept certain rules of behavior in governing their society. Freedom is ultimately enhanced by surrendering/sacrificing some measure of personal liberty in order to achieve a social contract and mutual respect/acknowledgement of mutual interests. But underpinning this social contract and what preserves our liberties in this country is the concept of inalienable rights of man.

This country is the first to be founded upon the belief in Inalienable Rights, or rights that cannot be surrendered to a sovereign government or power. We're born with those rights and our constitution and elected government are tasked with preserving those rights on our behalf. We, as citizens, recognize that our rights end where the rights of others begin.

Basically.. do unto unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I see no liberty without the recognition of inalienable rights of man and self-restraint against violating the rights of others, merely to pursue our unfettered freedom of action.
