Just going with the odds.... The two big parties have had a century to twist and manipulate the election laws, ballot access laws, and gerrymander political districts to benefit themselves so that most potential new opposition is kept at bay... and the upshot is that (in recent years) incumbents have achieved the highest reelection rates in our entire history as a nation. Over 90%. It is nothing to do with the 'people being stupid'. The game is rigged, and it's deliberate.
