I thought of it spontaneously while talking to a 9-year old about
snowboarding. It had that ring of the sort of thing that would
circulate amongst youngsters. The kid I told it too certainly
liked it. (Children like stories with more sex and violence then
we adults usually allow them to read. That's why they don't read
as much as they used to. Boys would read enough to ruin
their eye sight if you just gave them copies of "The Enforcer"
Playboy, and Sports Illustrated. Girls have similar interests, but
more sex, less violence. They would wear their eyes out on
Teen Romance novels etc.)

True enough up here guys paralyze themselves while boarding.
The most recent occurence was made famous when the doctor
who first patched the poor boy up wouldn't accept government
aid. The kid (about 19) didn't have insurance, and ended up
being sued for medical costs. It made the local paper front
page. Seems the doctor wouldn't accept medicare or medicaid
or whatever on principle. All in all, it was not a pretty picture.
I think that kids have a certain incorrect belief in their immortality,
and they need stories like this to remind them of the consequences
of error. Hey! It beats evolution!
