One jail cell for every convict, Alex? In California we are so far behind on this goal that judges are insisting that non-violent prisoners be set free because their rights are being violated by the conditions under which they are incarcerated! And in fact, the cost to the taxpayers is so great that many educators argue our schools are at risk for survival because of the money we do spend imprisoning people.

Would a violent crime be violent if there were no guns available? To a much lesser extent, I believe. I absolutely agree with you about the statistics on reduction in street crime in states where concealed weapons are now legal, but what else does that say statistically? That there are enormous numbers of criminals carrying guns. I am not sure that is reassuring. At what point do we get off this merry-go-round?

Let's just imagine for a moment a society like Canada, with no long history of citizens bearing arms, and much lower incidences of gun crimes. Would it be so bad to live like that? What is the real danger of a more peaceful, less-armed society? These are questions I obviously do not understand the answers to, because I am so puzzled by the insistence with which so many Americans want to own guns.
