"the right to strike without the corresponding right to be fired is one problem. A second problem is unions campaigning and financing politicians. "

Thank you for your insightful response. You have cut to the heart of the problem which has resulted in a cancerous entitlement ideology (owing to non-competition for jobs which are effectively tenured once hired) amongst many public "servants" (surely an oxymoron).

Somehow, the level of competition for public jobs needs to be increased...more teacher's colleges, more police academies, more fire department training colleges etc! Just too much fa, too much job security and too much pension for this "protected" environmental niche. :-)

Hi John - Very perceptive post.

Present events remind me of the 80's - the same issues, pretty much. People are arguing in terms of immediate "right" and "wrong", disregarding the long history of battles between different interests.

In one view, the US is a nation of monopolists: business, labor, teachers, doctors, engineers, everybody: they all try to grab "turf" then erect fences (professional associations, unions, controlled entry, anti-competitive actions etc.) to keep their prices high.

The old contests continue with the usual antagonism; everybody pointing fingers and firing off accusations. As the country adjusts to new economic realities they'll heat up even more ... the noise level rises, but life goes on.

Regards,

Jim
